Experiment on the average modulus of ettringite

Under the environment of seawater, the decrease of durability of concrete structure is mainly induced by erosion of seawater. If the sulfate ions get into the void in concrete materials, tile nucleation and growth of calcium sulphoaluminate (ettringite) crystal may take place. When the crystal touched the boundary of void, it will apply a force to the concrete materials. Under the action of the force, the micro damage will occur. In order to study the evolution of the micro damage, the modulus of ettringite should be determined. In this paper, the macro experimental method is adopted to detect the modulus of ettringite. There are three processes in the experiments. First, crystal of ettringite is obtained in terms of synthesizing method. Secondly, the powder of ettringite is compressed to form specimens. Thirdly, the modulus of ettringite is measured by macro experimental method at the strain rate of 10-4(1/s). It can be seen from the experimental results that the modulus of ettringite approximately is 9.71 GPa. The experimental results will be important for the analysis of damage evolution in concrete materials due to the erosion of sea water.
