Nonlinear behaviour of sand reinforced with denti-inclusions
In this paper, a new concept of soil reinforced with horizontal-vertical (H-V) reinforcing elements is proposed. Compared with conventional horizontally reinforced soils, the proposed one also has some vertical reinforcing elements placed on horizontal ones at intervals. A fundamental difference between the H-V reinforcing elements and other forms inclusions as well as fiber-reinforced soil is that in the presented H-V reinforced soil, besides friction between horizontal reinforcements and soil, passive resistance in the soil enclosed within the H-V reinforcing elements will occur, which will be against shearing and increase the strength and stability of the reinforced soil. A series of triaxial compression tests were carried out on sand reinforced with H-V reinforcements in radial symmetry, in which the galvanized iron sheet was used as reinforcements. The behavior of sand reinforced with different H-V reinforcing configurations is discussed in terms of stress-strain relationship and shear strength of the soil and a comparison is made between shear strength of the sand reinforced with horizontal reinforcement and with H-V reinforcing elements. Different configurations of H-V reinforcing elements are also discussed and compared. The experimental results and analyses indicate that H-V reinforcement gives an apparent cohesion to the sand, and increases the angle of internal friction significantly.
