Experimental researches on magneto-thermo-mechanical characterization of Terfenol-D

The effects of axial pre-stresses, different temperatures and applied magnetic fields on the magnetostrictive strain and the magnetization as well as Youngs modulus of a Terfenol-D rod were experimentally invesfigated in detail in this paper to give a good understanding on the magneto-thermal- mechanical characteristic of giant magnetostrictive materials. The experimental results show that the magneto-thermo-mechanical coupling interaction of giant magnetostrictive materials is obvious. The influence of the pre-stress and the temperature on the magnetostrictive strain and the Youngs modulus changes with the intensity of the magnetic field.
