Grazing bifurcations and asymmetry transitions in an impact oscillator with symmetric stops

In this paper, an impact oscillator with eccentric excitation and symmetric elastic stops is analyzed. Two kinds of Poincare maps are combined together to express the impact motion, especially two Poincare maps defined by the symmetric stops can efficiently identity the grazing bifurcations and the symmetry transitions. Besides the symmetric external grazing bifurcation, a new type of asymmetric grazing bifurcation from internal to external is observed firstly. Transitions of asymmetric periodic motions and chaos are also studied. The impact number per excitation period is demonstrated as a convenient and practical tool to identify grazing bifurcations and chaos.
