Characteristics of Polycyclic Acromtic Hydrocarbons(PAHs)in Road Dust in Industrial Areas of Ulsan

This study analyzed the concentrations of PAHs in road dust from different industrial areas in Ulsan to evaluate industrial emission effects to PAHs deposited in road dust. Dust samples were taken at 5 sites in 4 different large industrial complexes (IC) of Ulsan: non-ferrous IC (2 sites), petrochemical IC, a shipbuilding complex, and a motor manufacture. Road dust samples were separated into 4 particle size categories as follow: 850 μm - 2000 μm, 180 μm - 850 μm, 75 μm - 180 μm, and less than 75 μm. After being extracted by a mixture of dichloromethane and n-hexane (1:1), the extract was filtered and concentrated to 2 ml by using nitrogen evaporator. 16 PAHs included in USEPA list were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The concentration of total PAHs widely varied, from 7.22 ng.g-1 to 747.90 ng.g-1, depended on particle size of road dust sample. PAHs concentration increased when road dust particle size decreased. Based on size fractions of road dust in each area, PAHs contents in a weight unit of road dust were estimated. PAHs contents in road dust in industrial areas of Ulsan were from 69.32 ng.g-1 to 184.03 ng.g-1.5 - ring compounds were main compositions in PAHs deposited in road dust at non-ferrous metallic IC (62% and 83%); 4-ring PAHs were the dominant one at petrochemical IC and shipbuilding complex (33% and 35%, respectively); 6 - ring compounds were the predominant PAHs (44%) in road dust at motor manufacture area.
