From cloud and tropospheric aerosol observations in Beijing to indoor aerosol mapping, some recent innovative applications of the EZ Aerosoi Lidar TM system
The complex aerosol pattern over developing megacities calls for a better characterization regarding atmosphere dynamics, aerosol loading and aerosol regional transport, which can be achieved using remote observations of highly resolved structures of aerosols and clouds up to 15 km/20 km. Since July 2006, the EZ AEROSOL LIDARTM system currently provides this innovative characterization over Beijing region. At a smaller scale, the same Lidar system allows a full range from 60 m with high resolution in time (5 to 30 s) and space (1.5 m) to map the aerosol distribution in various urban environments at a short range using a scanning device. It has been deployed in different streets in Paris, but also for the first time in a subway station. These various and original results bring new insights to urban/mesoscale modellers and to the authorities due to take up these air quality challenges.
