Haze trends in Hebei Province during 1980—2003

The patterns and trends of haze in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province, China were presented for the period of 1980-2003. Visibility, relative humidity and other related data from 88 surface weather stations were considered. The observed visual range was used to calculate the extinction coefficient via the Koschmieder relationship. Haziness was measured by the extinction coefficient. The result showed that the most remarkable increase of haziness was occurred in the southwest part of Hebei Province near Mountain Taihang and the worst haze was over this region in recent years. The most marked decline occurred in Beijing urban area since the mid 1990s. In recent years, the haziness in some non-urban sites was higher than that in some urban sites.
