Thermodynamic Modelling of the Ce-Zn and Al-Zn-Ce Systems
This work attempts for the first time to thermodynamically model the Ce-Zn and Al-Zn-Ce system using the CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) method. A full thermodynamic description of the Ce-Zn system has been established. Based on the experimental data, Gibbs free energies of the solution phases (liquid, bcc, fcc, hep) were modelled by the subregular solution model with the Redlich-Kister formula, and those of the other nine compounds, CeZn, CeZn2, CeZn3, Ce3Zn11, Ce13Zn58, CeZn5, Ce3Zn22, Ce2Zn17 and CeZn11 were describled by sublattice model. Good agreement on the phase diagram in the Ce-Zn system is obtained between the calculations and the experimental results. The phase equilibrium in the Al-Zn-Ce system has been calculated by Combining the thermodynamic parameters of the Al-Ce, Al-Zn and Ce-Zn binary systems and the available experiment data in literature.
