INVESTIGATION OF LOCAL SLIP PHENOMENON AND FINITE ELEMENT NUMERICAL SIMULATION

A local micro-slip analysis model is established to study self-loosening of bolted joints and similar phenomena. Finite element numerical method is introduced to simulate the local micro-slip. The current investigation and FE simulations indicate that a constant contact pressure and an alternating bending moment result in the gradual motion between the contact surfaces. A detailed look at the contact surfaces reveals that localized slip along the tangential direction occurs in part of the contact area and the accumulation of this local slip is responsible for the gradual motion between contact surfaces. The FE simulations also indicate that the amplitude of the bending moment greatly influences the relative displacement between the contact surfaces. There exists a threshold value of bending moment below which local slip will not occur.
