THE LEAST SQUARE CIRCULAR ARC APPROXIMATION OF NURBS CURVE
An algorithm for approximation arbitrary NURBS (non-uniform rational B-Spline) curves with the least square circular arc is presented. The objective is to minimize the square sum error between the original NURBS curve and the approximated curve. Firstly, according to the data points measured on the surface, NURBS curves parametric formulation are constructed based on the reverse engineering. Second, approximating the NURBS curve with piecewise circular arc to within the required tolerance. The start and end points of circular arc are on the original curve, So the continuity of circular arc is ensured. It is proved in practice that approximation precision of NURBS curve is high and connection between arcs is smooth. Compared with other approximation algorithm, a lot of middle points are deleted and circular arc number is least. Moreover, it,reduces the information transferred from the CAD system to the CNC system and improves the efficiency and quality of machining. The method is most useful in numerical control to drive the cutter along straight line or circular paths.
