Cooperation In Building Dredgers For The Chinese Market System integration creates win-win situation for all parties
For many decades IHC Holland, as the largest specialized dredger builder, has cooperated in all kinds of dredger building projects in different countries all over the world. The following paper has a focus on the increasing changes in the supply chain for the local manufacturing of dredgers. Though these developments can be seen in many countries over the world the most challenging changes are taking place in China. It effects greatly the way the market in China has to be approached. The greatest effect is the increasing contribution of local yards and suppliers to the completion of the dredger as a working system. The challenge when dividing design and manufacturing responsibility into shared deliveries and system integration is to achieve a good quality and well functioning of the dredger within shortest possible delivery time and cost.IHC experienced the last 10 years a lot of different cooperation models and it is still a challenging target in coping with these changing demands in the market. For the Chinese market special designs have been developed based on both the IHC and our customers experience in order to control the quality of those dredge components, which undergo high loads in the dredging process and are not under the responsibility of a Classification Bureau.IHC has set up their own production facility for these components as well as a service centre and outsourcing bureau. This effort has shown its great ability to match market demands in cooperation with the local shipyard. It also allows less experienced shipyards to enter the local market of dredger building. The end result is lower pricing for dredgers and less burden of duties for imported goods.Within the scope of market changes IHC also focus on creating quality of after sales service by IHC educated Chinese staff, supported by the experts at the home base. The paper will in depth explain how adapted design allows the implementation of local manufactured and or purchased items into a complete well functioning dredger. In this way all parties end up in a win-win situation; the end user gets a state of the art design with reliable components and service against a competitive price; the local yard can demonstrate its shipbuilding capabilities and IHC Holland will take their responsibility in relation to the scope of work.Design philosophy, component delivery, technical assistance, system integration, maximum production/power ratio, production guarantee, workability, exploitation cost and lifecycle support are aspects that will be discussed and illustrated with various examples of successful designs of cutter suction dredgers recently delivered or under construction.
