Centrifugal pumps driven by a variable speed transmission gearbox
The working point or manometric head of a dredgepump is determined by the intersection, in the Q-H diagram, of the pump characteristics and the pipeline characteristics. The pump characteristics is the combination of the characteristics of the centrifugal pump and the characteristics of the drive. The pipeline characteristics is the sum of all the resistances in the suction and discharge pipeline of a transport system and includes also the effects of acceleration and the pressure loss due to changes in pipe elevation. The most important system parameter is how pressure head varies with slurry flowrate, depicted by the system curve.Several parameters have an effect on the point of intersection. Important parameters are the average grainsize diameter, length and diameter of the pipeline, mixture velocity and concentration, speed, power and type of the drive, diameter and number of blades of the impeller. Most parameters are not constant during dredging.A variation in one of these parameters results in a change of the working point. Therefore a dredgepump, and also the drive, must be capable of spanning a large number of potential working points, which to gather constitute a working range.This paper describes a gearbox with a continuously variable transmission ratio, making it possible to drive the pump by a diesel engine always working in its Best Efficiency Point and at constant power. The gearbox controlling system enables reactions on other process parameters such as: vacuum, discharge pressure and dredge mixture velocity.
