Integrated Investigation On The Siltation Of Huanghua Port During The First Phase Dredging

Huanghua Port is newly constructed for coal-export in North China. An integrated investigation was carried out from 2000 to 2002 during the first phase dredging project (1998-2002). Through field surveys, satellite remote sensing data analyses and laboratory experiments, the siltation phenomena of seasonal variation are disclosed and the siltation reasons are summed up. It is concluded that the dredged material disposal affects the siltation little and the material deposited in the outer channel mainly comes from the beach surface. The low sediment concentration in summer corresponds to low siltation, while the increased suspended sediment concentration due to large wind waves corresponds to the strong harbor siltation. The rapid siltation may attribute to high concentrated sediment suspension near seabed due to waves. The representative settling velocity is larger for coarser sediment, which also accelerate the siltation because coarser sediment is sufficiently suspended in windy days. The current along breakwaters strengthens the local siltation in the outer channel.
