Preparation, Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Aqueous Complex Agents Ag-carboxymethyl Chitosan-thiabendazole

Four aqueous complex agents of Ag-Carboxymethyl chitosan-thiabendazole (Ag-CMCTS-TBZ) were prepared using chitosans with molecular weights (MWs) of 72.4, 166, 305 and 400 kDa respectively. FT-IR spectroscopy, ZetaPlus particle size analyzing and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assessment were used to characterize them, and showed that the four agents have good antimicrobial activity with MICs ranging from 30 to 125 mg/L for bacteria Escheriehia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and yeast Candida albicans and 100-1800 mg/L for fungi Aspergillus niger, Mucor sp., and the smaller apparent diameter of the agents did not certainly lead to better antimicrobial activity within the range of 365~1229 nm.
