System Cost Oriented Task Allocation and Hardware Redundancy Strategy for Distributed Computing System
Distributed computing system (DCS) plays an important role in computing applications, and it can increase system reliability significantly. On the other hand, system cost related to the system reliability, is a great concern from the managements point of view. In this paper, a system reliability model which takes into account bom hardware failure and software failure is proposed and studied. A system cost model considering risk cost for system unreliability is developed. The objective of the optimal task allocation and hardware redundancy problem studied in this paper is to minimize the total system cost by deciding appropriate task allocation matrix and hardware redundancy vector. An illustrative example using genetic algorithm is given. The proposed system reliability model and system cost model can be used to help the management design appropriate distributed computing systems.
