Simulation of Polymer Extrusion Process
Extrusion is a very important technology in polymer processing industry for manufacturing pipes, sheet, profile of various shapes, fiber spinning, film casting, film blowing, blow molding, and so on. Two main research aspects in the extrusion process will be discussed in this paper. Firstly, numerical simulation of the extrusion process will be conducted by FEM, which is related with change of polymer conformation caused by flow filed in the process. Secondly, a micro-rheological model will be proposed to describe the flow induced crystallization (FIC) phenomenon during the extrusion process of semi-crystalline polymeric materials. Our work is an effort to realize a complete understanding of polymer extrusion process, including flow fields, die swell, free surface, neck-in, temperature variation, stress distribution, orientation and stretch of polymer chains and FIC.
