Purification of Recovered Crude Terephthalic Acid from PET Fabric Alkali Hydrolysis Process Wastewater
A study has been made of treatment of disodium terephthalate received in the wastewater from PET fabric alkali hydrolysis process by sulfuric acid and activated carbon purification of the recovered crude terephthalic acid (CTA). The results showed that the character of recovered CTA was improved by the method of activated carbon absorption when the amount of activated carbon was 1.0 g/L. The purity of the PTA obtained was tested by determining its acid value and by polymerizing it with ethylene glycol using tetrabutyl titanate as catalyst. The method is very useful in recycling of CTA from PET fabric alkali hydrolysis process wastewater and other containers because nowadays PTA is replacing dimethyl terephthalate as the main monomer in the industrial production of PET.
