Processing of Textiles by Electron-Beam Irradiation Technique
The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric was grafted with 2-(perfluorooctyl) ethyl acrylate (PFEA) and two silicon monomers with different molecular weight by using electronbeam irradiation technique, and its water repellent property was investigated by measuring water contact angle on the fabric. The degree of PFEA grafting was increased with increase in monomer concentration at 300 kGy dose, and maximal grafting was obtained at 13.3 wt% to weight of fabric. The contact angle of water droplet was also enhanced up to 138°as the degree of PFEA grafting rose. For silicon monomers, degree of grafting was between 0.5 and 1 wt% , which was much smaller as compared with PFEA, regardless of the monomer concentration and molecular weight. However, efficiency of water repellency, meaning contact angle per grafting degree, on silicongrafted PET was greater than on fluoromonomer-grafted one. Washing durability of monomergrafted PET fabric was excellent except the fabric grafted with silicon monomer with higher molecular weight.
