Study on the Surface Structure of Silk Fibroin

The surface structure and the microstructure of silk fibroin have been studied with SEM analysis. The external factors affecting silk structure and properties have also been investigated. The results showed that there is a continuous outmost layer at silk fibroin surface, and it is this surface layer that integrates the inner microstructure units into single fiber and imparts smooth velvet handle, elegant pearlescent luster and strong strength to silk fiber. Some external factors such as light, heat, and alkali treatments could destroy the outmost surface layer and affect the luster, handle, strength and other physical and mechanical properties of silk fiber, as well as the dyeing properties of silk with reactive dyes. A new model of silk microstructure characterized by a continuous outmost layer at silk fibroin surface has been proposed.
