Cross-sectional Area Measurement of Reinforcing Natural Fibres
The tensile strength or Youngs modulus of reinforcing natural fibres is one of the important indexes to judge the bearing capability of the reinforced composites. The cross-sectional area, as an important parameter to determine the mechanical properties of fibres, its measurement is focused on in this study. Four different methods are used and compared in order to choose the, optimum method for cross-sectional area measurement in tensile strength or Youngs modulus calculation. Eventually, the linear-weight density method is recommended, as its easiness, comparatively accuracy, the same specimen for both cross-sectional area measurement and tensile test, common test apparatus and easily standardization.
