Cloth Parameterization and Objective Evaluation of Physically-based Cloth Models

In this work we present new methods for estimating cloth damping parameters for physically based models by means of image analysis and instrumentation. Besides standard parameters , there are other modeling parameters like damping coefficients which are not mandatory but if included, improve the quality of simulations significantly. Two types of damping coefficients are investigated: air damping and viscous damping. By incorporation of these parameters, very realistic cloth simulations have been achieved. Another part of the work is to formulate a method to objectively evaluate cloth simulations besides visual comparisons. A method is developed to evaluate cloth deformation in dynamic condition by using a dynamic drape meter. The revolving drape coefficient is used as a comparative parameter for validation of our dynamic cloth simulations. Three types of fabric samples with varied mechanical properties were taken in the present study. Objective study has shown good agreement between experimental and simulated results for the chosen samples.
