Improvement of the Electrospinnability of Polyvinyl Alcohol via Dialysis and Complexation Pretreatment

The electrospinnability of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) aqueous solutions from three different suppliers (S1, S2 and F16) was earned out at various electrospmmng conditions. The solutions of the sample F16 behaved best in electrospinning, whereas the worst S1 solutions only experienced electro-spraying. The measurements of the spinning solution properties showed that the electric conductivity and viscosity of F16 solutions were slightly increased and the surface tensions were slightly decreased with the increase of polymer concentration. However, S1 solutions indicated totally different behaviors, the electric conductivity increased almost linearly with the dosages of PVA, and the surface tension presented V-shaped curves with the dosages of PVA, and the viscosity were slightly escalated at lower concentrations and then soared up rapidly at higher concentrations. The metal element analysis with plasma of the sample S1 indicated that the contents of calcium ions and aluminum ions were about 47. 8 ppm and 53. 4 ppm respectively. The electrospinnability of S1 was substantially improved both by dialysis with regenerated cellulose bag and complexation with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA). The dosage of calcium chloride into F16 aqueous solutions also aggravated electrospinnability. It was intramolecular crosslinking at low concentrations and intermolecular crosslinking at high concentrations occurred between PVA chains and multivalent metal ions that coined the abnormal behaviors in surface tension and electric conductivity and viscosity and thus deteriorated electrospinnability of the sample S1.
