Study on Wool Fiber Structure and Fabric Properties with Pretreatment/Enzyme Treatment

Low-temperature plasma, oxidation and enzyme surface modification technologies were applied for studying wool fiber structure and fabric property. The SEM and FTIR-ATR were employed to analyze the surface morphology and chemical structure of modified wooL The SEM analysis indicates changes on the wool epicuticle when pretreated by low-temperature plasma and oxidation combined with enzyme, to reveal the reasons for imparting an improved finishing effect to wools treated with surface modifications. FTIR-ATR analyses show surface lipid modification and the surface disulfide bonds scission on the surface modified wool The synergistic effect between surface enzyme S modification and woolen protein, resulting in softening agent to absorb and fix on wool fibers, significantly improving the wool fabric performance such as shrinkage-resistance, anti-pilling, appearance and handle values.
