Free Radical Graft Polymerization of PNIPAAM onto Cellulose Cotton Fabrics
Thermo-sensitive cellulose cotton fabrics based on cellulosic cotton and N-isoproplacrylamide were prepared by solution free radical graft polymerization using hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2)/ L-Ascorbic acid(H2A) as a redox system. The optimized reaction conditions by varing the concentration of monomer, initiator and reaction time afford maximum degree of grafting(G%). The effects of these parameters on G% have also been studied and the results were discussed. Absorbency at different temperatures was used to express the thermo-sensitive property of cellulose-graft-Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (cell-g-PNIPAAM). FTIR and SEM were used to confirm the grafting reaction having taken place between PNIPAAM and cotton fabrics. The transition temperature of grafted cotton was measured by DSC. Meanwhile the reaction mechanism among H2O2, H2A and cellulosic cotton was studied The result shows that the cotton cellulose can be initiated by the ascorbate anion radicalA-. , then graft polymerization with NIPAAM.
