Gain-guided Soliton Fiber Lasers (Invited Paper)

Gain-guided soliton operation of passively mode-locked fiber lasers was experimentally observed and numerically investigated. It was shown that the gain-guided solitons have large pulse energy, strong frequency chirp, and a spectral bandwidth limited by the effective laser gain bandwidth. Furthermore, we have also investigated the gain-guided dispersion-managed fiber lasers, and revealed a regime where both the conventional laser soliton and the gain-guided soliton coexist and compete. Possibility of achieving large pulse energy and high-peak power mode-locked pulse in mode-locked fiber lasers will also be discussed.
