ASYMMETRIC LONG PERIOD FIBER GRATINGS FABRICATED BY THE FOCUSED CO2 LASER BEAM CARVING PERIODIC GROOVES ON THE FIBER
A novel asymmetric long period fiber grating (LPFG) with a large attenuation of up to -47.39dB and a low insertion loss of down to 0.34dB is fabricated by the focused CO2 laser beam carving periodic grooves on the single side of optical fiber. Such periodic grooves and the stretch-induced periodic microbends enhance effectively refractive index modulation in the LPFG so that the average strain sensitivity of resonant wavelength is increased by 229 times and is up to -102.89nm/mε. And the LPFGs resonant wavelength and transmission attenuation can be tuned by ~ 12nm and ~ 20dB, respectively, by the application of a stretching force.
