All-optical Packet Switching and its Key Technologies (Invited Paper)
In the future, with the development of optical fiber transmission technique, the bit-rate will over 100Gb/s for single wavelength, and the distances will over hundreds of kilometers without O/E/O conversion, but the O/E/O conversion in node will become the bottleneck. All-optical switching network is the inevitable trend. By now many kinds of all-optical switching network have been proposed, such as wavelength-switching-based network, optical bust switching network (OBS), and optical label switching (OLS). Optical Packet Switching (OPS) is one of optimum schemes. It can support flexibility of switching, extends the direct path of an optical packet, and diminishes the O/E/O conversion. It has been become the focus of research and development of all-optical network. This paper will view the development of the OPS, and analyzes its key technologies, and than reports the experiment of one of OPS with ring topology (O-RPR), its layers, the optical buffer, and serial optical packet synchronizer, etc.
