ANALYSIS OF POLARIZATION-DEPENDENT OPTICAL FIBER LINKS (Invited Paper)
The theory for distributed estimations of polarization-dependent effects in optical fiber links using reflectometric technology (POTDR) is generalized. Based on the analysis of the forward and round-trip Mueller matrices, the local birefringence and the local dichroism are analysed. To measure these local polarization effects, virtual generalized Mueller matrix method (VGMMM) is proposed. VGMMM can use a larger length step to attain low-noise data and does not require the knowledge of input polarization states, which can make the system simpler and the measurement accuracy higher.
