10 GIGABIT RESILIENT ETHERNET RINGS FOR METRO NETWORKS (Invited)
10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) over optical fiber is rapidly becoming an attractive alternative for metro networks. This paper discusses our recently proposed optical Resilient Ethernet Ring (RER) architecture, which allows Ethernet to be operated in ring topologies for efficient data transport in metro networks. Developed based on the standard Ethernet data-link switching technology, RER is both simple and data-efficient. Basic RER system architecture, frame structure, frame forwarding mechanism and self-learning process are described. Different protection schemes are also discussed.
