OPTICAL FIBER SENSORS BASING ON NANOSTRUCTURES (Invited Paper)
The combination of fiber optics with micro- and nanostructure technologies offers a great potential for the realization of novel sensor concepts, particularly for chemical and biosensing applications. First, in the paper selected examples of advanced fiber sensor systems based on sub-wavelength structured components will be presented. Such examples are highly sensitive extrinsic fiber-optic humidity and hydrocarbon sensors for application in gas industry and in environmental monitoring using nano-porous thin-film Fabry-Perot transducer elements, and intrinsic fiber Bragg grating sensor networks for structural health monitoring and chemical detection. Finally, new concepts for chemical and biochemical sensing applying plasmonic nano-beads, photonic crystal fibers, and optical nano-wires as well will be discussed.
