FIBER OPTIC MICHELSON INTERFEROMETRIC SENSORS DETECTING WEAK MAGNETIC FIELD Invited Paper
Magnetostrictive fiber-optic interferometric sensors have great advantages in detecting low-intensity magnetic field and significant progress has been made recently. In this paper, we investigate and compare the performance of Mach-Zehnder and Michelson fiber-optic interferometric sensors. A new structure of transducer called racetrack transducer for the fiber optic Michelson interferometer was implemented. The experimental results show that it has high sensitivity and directivity with long-term stability. In addition to the traditional hardware electronic detection, we implemented peak-to-peak detection and found the sensitivity and stability can be improved, especially in detecting ultra low magnetic field. We also developed a scheme using AD converters and software for detection. Example detecting a DC magnetic field was given and the results agree well with the one obtained using hardware electronics.
