The Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel Maintenance Dredging Project

The Yangtze Estuary deepwater channel regulation project is a maritime engineering works of the largest scale ever since the foundation of New China in 1949. It comprises the buildings of guide dikes, groins to divert flow and widening, deepening and extension of channel by dredging. The dredging works for the stage 1 channel was commenced in July, 1999, the channel from the upper entrance of the North Passage till outside estuary was dredged into a double-way channel, 300m. width in bottom and 51.77km. long. The dredging works of 31.82 m.3 has been completed by using more man ten of trailed suction hopper dredge with which are in hopper capacity from 6500,4500 to 2000m3. By the end of March, 2000, the depth has been reached up to the required -8.5m navigable depth. This paper gives a presentation of the process, problems and measures taken and some lessons and experience drawn from the execution of the works. About the authors:
