Research on the Applicability of the Dredge Boat on the Lower Yellow River
The Yellow River is well known to me world for its heavy load of sediment. Subject to silting-up, breaching and course change, it has brought serious calamity to the people along its banks. Therefore, flood control is one of me top concerns of the Chinese nation.In past dynasties, dredging was taken as one of flood control measures. Yet due to restriction of social and technical conditions, no marked effects were achieved. Since the foundation of new China, according to the characteristic that the Yellow River has high silt content, dredge boats or pomps have been used to draw sediment for dyke reinforcement Up to the year 2000, among the embankments on the lower Yellow River, 374 km had reached standards with an accumulative earthwork volume of 136 million m3. In 1965, Yellow River Management Bureau of Shandong succeeded in the experiment of strengthening dykes by desilting with simple dredge boats. Since men on, research on applicability of the dredge boat on the Yellow River has been carried out and much progress has been made; the boat has transformed from the simple squirting-pumping type to the stirring-pumping type, silt transportation has changed from transporting by a single boat to transporting by a boat with relay pumps added, and the way of pumping silt has changed from pumping site near the bank to reinforce dykes to dredging the channel to strengthening the dykes.
