Hunan Province 8018 cutting wheel dredger to dredge the most sticky clay in China
Half August 2002 VOSTA LMG in co-operation with a modern Chinese shipyard situated in Changde, Hunan Province, successfully delivered a wheel dredge type WSD 400 M to Hunan Province Waterway and Dredging Engineering Company in China. The order for the design and component package was given by the China Water Investment Corporation (CWI) who ordered already 5 cutter suction dredge packages at VOSTA LMG before.The main task of this wheel dredge is to maintain the inland waterways in the Dong Ting Lake area and especially to deepen the difficult spots where the so-called diamond clay is located. Diamond clay is known as the hardest and most sticky clay to be found in China. It contains virtually no sand and is used for making red bricks for house construction. For the owner this dredge meant quite an improvement because up to now dredging was only possible by means of a less efficient backhoe dredge.VOSTA LMG has a big history in cutting wheels, even back to the 19th century. From mat time on the UCW (Underwater Cutting Wheel) developed to a very productive dredging tool. Within the company there is a lot of know-how about soils and UCW test results.A wheel dredge offers an alternative for a cutter suction dredge. The VOSTA.LMG cutting wheel consists of two cutting wheel halves installed on a horizontal shaft The performance of the cutting wheel in hard and sticky soil proved itself near Dong Ting Lake where other dredges were unable to dredge.
