Training Simulator For Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers with a Dynamic and Realistic Dredging Process

With the growing fleet of Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers and also the shorter working times per crew, mere is a need for more dredge operators. To train these operators efficiently, a training simulator has been developed for Jan de Nul. This simulator includes a dredge control desk similar to that installed on the newest dredger Juan Sebastian de Ekano.With the simulator, all dredging activities daring loading as well as during unloading can be trained. Therefore, all related processes including sensors, actuators and the dynamic relationship between the processes are simulated, to obtain a realistic process. Actuators (pumps, valves, doors etc) can be controlled manually as well as automatically using the installed automation equipment. Incorrect manual control actions by the operator will result in the expected process reactions. The instructor can initiate dangerous process situations or faulty equipment to teach the trainee (operator) to find the fault by using the on-board diagnostics. Furthermore, all powers for jet-water, pump-process, trailing and auxiliaries are calculated to simulate the load of the thesel engines. The operator has to optimise the dredging process within the load limitations.The simulator can be adapted to odier trailing suction hopper dredgers by selecting a number of specific options at the start of the training session, such as electrical or direct driven pumps, drive-mode of gearboxes, suction tube configurations, etc. This simulator makes it possible to efficiently train different and difficult situations not easy to realise on board a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger.
