Environmental Aspects of Dredging: Tools and techniques for optimal projects and Real project experiences
For environmental dredging works various tools and techniques have been developed, mat are able to meet very strict project demands. In addition to that, several mitigating options are at hand, should dredge performance not meet the expectations. For justified application of the best-suited techniques and procedures, a proper understanding of the relation between environment and project execution is essentiaL During the works, this urges for a close and accurate moniloring of performances. However, real life projects regularly show that close control of very basic aspects of operations is much more effective and of greater environmental importance than application of a highly sophisticated techniques. Yet a thorough understanding of dredging principles and dredged material behaviour is essential for responsible and durable project management. This paper discusses bom the available techniques, as highlights a few recent project experiences. Many techniques perform best use in undisturbed riverine deposits, but most projects are located in urbanised or industrialised areas where numerous obstructions impose a special approach.
