Use of GPS for Marine Construction in Japan

The use of the Global Positioning System (hneafter referred to as GPS) in marine construction in Japan began in 1995 with the full scale introduction of the realtime kinematic GPS (hereafter referred to as RTK-GPS) that can perform positioning with accuracy of a few centimeters both horizontally and vertically. In the early years, many of toe major types of working boats such as dredgers, survey ships, and foundation improvement ships used RTK-GPS for controlling of horizontal positioning, but almost none used it for vertical positioning to control dredging depth and foundation improvement depth etc.Only recendy has the use of the RTK-GPS for vertical positioning begun, it is begun used to advantage in the leveling of ground with bulldozers and the measurement of ground settlement, in the construction of offshore airport by land reclamation.A challenge that remains to be overcome is to take the possible advantage of the strong point of RTK-GPS; namely, its ability to perform vertical positioning on working boats in order to perform marine construction more efficiently and economically by advancing the automation and robotization of working boats. This has the potential to transform the way that working boats arc operated. The author describes the background to the expanding use of RTK-GPS in marine construction in Japan: government participation at the initial stage, the use of dedicated radio waves to transmit GPS satellite data received by a reference station to working boats, and the continued execution of large scale marine constructions. The author understands that it is important to take an advantage of vertical positioning .the author also gives an example of technology that can perform vertical positioning as well as horizontal positioning in order to expand me use of RTK-GPS.
