Environmental Dredger and South-North Water Transfer Project
The South-North Water Transfer Project, or diversion of surplus water from the Yangtze river north into the basin of the Yellow rivet, is a strategic infrastructure project aimed to mitigate shortage of flow in the Yellow river, the Huaibe river, and the Haibe river in the northern area of China by optimizing water resources of the country, as closely related to the long-term, sustainable economical and ecological developments of this area. For the past 40 years, numerous efforts have been made from central government to provincial level, and common understanding has been reached on such issues as draught situation in the north area, water conservation and pollution prevention, transferable quantity of water from the Yangtze river, ecological impact, overall planning and layout of diversion routes, project scope, implementation stages and phases, and economic and management policy for project implementation and operation. During the process, key targets and tasks of the project are defined, and three diversion routes are proposed, namely the East, the Middle, and the West routes, based on geographic features of the Yangtze river and the northern area where water is in short supply. Each route has its main task and reasonable supply scope, and yet the completion of each one is mutually supplementary. Rehabilitation of waterway and protection of water quality is vital to the project Therefore, environmental dredging and harnessing are made indispensable.In order to ensure smooth progress of the project, environmental dredgers are needed for dredging and maintenance of the waterways. Overseas environmental dredging can be grouped into two categories: underwater dredging, and trash skimming or above water cleaning. The relevant equipment has lnany advanced features. In China, we still have a wide gap in this field. Also unavoidable is the problem of ecological balance, which is vital to the sustainable development of the nation. With implementation of the project, there is no time for delay in the development and import of advanced technical equipment for environmental dredging. As a matter of fact, environmental dredgers may find wide use in other projects as well, such as rehabilitation of urban water systems, water supply systems, lakes and reservoirs, Three Gorges Project, cleaning of waters for scenery spots, etc.
