Practice of Embankment Filling Method by Dredger
Abstract: Site Preparation Contract of Meghnaghat Combined Cycle Power Plant Project is the first Design+Construct (Turnkey) Project in Bangladesh carried out by China National Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Corporation 13th Bureau. The Contract Period is 300 days (Mar.22. 1999-Jan.17, 2000); total cost is Tk. 1,416,530,296(abont USD29.50million).The Project is the earlier stage project of 450MW(Natural Gas) Power Plant planned by Bangladesh Power Development Board. It lies beside Meghna River and 22km east south of Dhaka; access road is connected with Dhaka-Karmira Road. The Site occupies about 100 hectare, the average filling height is 6m, and rilling volume is about 64.0 million cu.m. The proposed Site lies at the bottomland between Meghna main river, branch river and road, the original elevation is 0~3.5m, and it is flooded every monsoon, and affected by tide, the tide water level is about 3.0~5.5m. To satisfy the design water level which can resist 200 years flood, the existing site needs to be filled to +8.0m, the wave wall elevation is 9.0m.Embankment construction of Site filling is the key of the project. During bidding period the construction method of embankment is the traditional method, namely bulldozer collecting material, excavator excavating and embanking, roller compacting. The said method is only available for dry season, namely dry-type construction. But the commencement date is just on monsoon of Bangladesh, the proposed design embankment area is all flooded. Moreover next working procedure cannot go on without finishing the embankment. Therefore we tried two times practice of embankment construction method.
