Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass in A Spout-Fluidized Bed Reactor

Biomass, as a unique renewable resource that can be employed to convert into liquid fuel, has drawn attention in the research field of substitute energy source. An efficient technique, so far having been conveniently adopted to produce liquid fuel from biomass is pyrolysis1,2. Pyrolysis is such a process in which biomass is directly subjected to thermal conversion with short residence time, at medium range of temperature but high heating rate and therefore is yielded the liquid fuel of high quality and of high energy concentration. Short residence time is referred to the reaction time limited within seconds so that secondary reactions can be avoided. However, sufficient residence time is necessary to maintain thermal conversion of feed particle of certain size. How to mitigate these two different required residence times is one of the problems to be solved in development of pyrolysis technology for biomass.Spout-fluidized bed, an integration of fluidized bed and spouted bed, is new fluidizing technology3,4. When this type of reactor is applied in biomass pyrolysis, gas product conies out continuously while the solid particles recycle until they become small enough to be entrained in the gas flow. Spouting fluidization, which can satisfy short residence time for gas product and long one for solid panicle, is therefore effective and efficient for biomass pyrolysis.The experiment consists of two parts. PartⅠwas recycling-flow characteristic of quartz sand mixed with sawdust. Part two is the results pyrolysis of biomass in the reactor.
