Gasification of Biomass for Electricity Generation and the Provision of Liquid Biofules, Status and Prospects

Within the last years the interest for renewable energies has increased significantly because at the climatic gas reduction and the independence of fuel imports as a main target of the energy system.Based on the different possibilities for energy provision the technique of biomass gasification promises several advantages (technical potentials, efficiency, product quality, etc.) for electricity generation and the provision of liquid fuels. In spite of these advantages of biomass gasification and the long history of this technique, no market break trough could be realised. The restraints for that are still founded in the technical execution; furthermore an economical operation needs to be achieved within the next yean.Hence, in this analysis different opportunities for gasification reactors as well as requirements needed for overall systems for the target of electricity generation and the fuel provision are identified. For both opportunities the choice of gasification techniques dependence strongly on the scale of a respective plant; for this question of scale proposals are developed too. These different concepts have to be investigated further and respective (demonstration-) plants have to be examined under scientific support. Under the conditions mentioned in this paper, biomass gasification can deliver an important contribution in the energy system within the next years.
