乡绅阶层与南卡罗莱纳查尔斯顿的城市景观:以亨利·劳伦斯为例,1740-1780
Introduction Between1740s and1770s,as metropolitan Britain maintained its political and commercial harmony with South Carolina colony,Charleston merchants imitated gentrification movement of metropolitan merchants. As manufacture industry was rather poor,South Carolina merchants were eager to import items such as glass, cloth, furniture from the imperial metropolis.”It is in general believed,”remarked one visitor to Charleston in the1760s,”that they are more attached to the Mother Country, than those”from”Provinces which lie more to the Northward.”1Taking advantage of commercial harmony between the metropolitan Britain and the colony, colonial merchants accumulated a large number of fortunes.In1773,while visiting Charleston,Boston merchant Josiah Quincy wrote:”I can only say in general, that in grandeur, splendor of buildings,decorations,equipages,numbers...and indeed in almost every thing,it far surpasses all I ever saw,or expected to see in America.”2Through importing a large number of architectural materials, the gentry class of Charleston introduced architectural styles of the metropolitan Britain into the colony. At the same time, through building different kinds of Georgian houses, the gentry class directly took part in shaping urban landscape.
