China”s Strategies in International News Coverage:An Analysis of the Representation of the US Presidential Election Campaign in Chinese Newspapers
This paper examines how the newspapers in China presented the 2012 US presidential election campaign to their audience and how did the coverage uphold the domestic political ideology and serve to maintain domestic political stability.Five newspapers were selected for this study, and these newspapers included People”s Daily, Southern Daily,The Beijing News, Southern Metropolitan Daily, Global Times.Results of quantitative content analysis show that the news article sources were dominated by their own sources or official Chinese sources, with a small percentage of diverse voices as a supplement;the primary object of the news coverage was to influence readers with opinions;the stances mainly fell in the neutral or balanced stance;the issue frame occupied 40.4% , followed by the fame frame and independent frame.Results of qualitative content analysis show that there are a number of balanced or neutral reporting,which reflects China”s political ideology of China”s peaceful development to some degree.In order to exert the function to maintain political stability,Chinese newspapers adopted the strategies of negative reporting and selecting pro-China views.Nevertheless, a small number of them mentioned the positive meaning of the democratic system and practices, which reflected an effort of strong-market oriented newspapers to achieve professionalism as well as a way to gain trust from their audience.
