RANS simulation of the flow around a ship in head waves
The flow around a ship travelling in a head wave is simulated by RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Naiver-Stokes) method using OpenFOAM.To generate a head wave, the wave orbital velocity and surface evaluation are superposed on the uniform inflow boundary condition at the boundary in front of the ship.A wave absorption zone, which is located at the back of the computational domain, is created via adding damping terms to the right-hand side of RANS equations to avoid wave reflection from the downstream boundary.During the simulation, the ship dynamic motions of heave and pitch are completely fixed but the simulation is under the condition with given ship sinkage and trim, i.e.the diffraction problem. The computed results, especially the wave evaluations, are compared with available experimental data and discussed.
