A Study on Equalization Strategy in Battery Management Systems

  The battery management system as an important part for electric vehicles is used to manage the way of battery storing and releasing energy.In order to improve energy usage efficiency, the cell voltage and state of charge (SoC)/capacity based equalization strategies are discussed both in the passive and active equalization topologies in this paper.In practical, the cost of the active equalization is usually higher than passive equalization.Besides, the safety and reliability of the active equalization can”t be guaranteed due to its complex control systems.On the contrary, the passive equalization strategies are easier to complement.Experiments under dynamic stress test profiles (DST) are performed to verify the algorithm performance.A cell voltage based passive balance equalization strategy is applied on a lithium-ion battery pack which is used on the urban bus.The experiments show that good equalization results can be obtained by proposed methods.
