Conceptual design of high discharge barrier in Shanghai Area with typical Dutch solution
During summer months the city of Shanghai, China, experiences storm surges from the East China Sea and high discharge in the Yangtze River.Owing to climate change, the probability of floods will increase. Therefore, Shanghai must be protected from both Yangtze River and the East China Sea.This paper explores the feasibility, conceptual design of constructing a ”closable open”high discharge barrier that flood-proofs the Shanghai area and takes into account the needs of nature. This system would allow tidal flow during normal water levels and prevent flooding during high water levels.
