A numerical study of flow and mixing around the seamount under double-seamount system
The flow and mixing around an idealized seamount through the action of vortex in the double-seamount system were investigated using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS).Results indicate that vortex interacting with the latter seamount will reduce its relative vorticity by 45% compared to no latter seamount situation and increase the new wake vortex intensity by 1.1 folds compared to only uniform incoming flow effect. The interaction of vortex and seamount increases the maximum kinetic energy and vertical velocity around the seamount region by 1.72 folds and 55% compared to no vortex situation. The vortex evolution can be attributed to the intensified flow around the seamount and the increase in stress/strain effect between the seamount and vortex. The maximum v and u velocities around the seamount increase by 128% and 27% compared to only uniform incoming flow situation.
