SHARING DATA ON FITNESS APPLICATIONS:THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL FACTORS
With users being increasingly conscious of the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles and carrying out physical activities, fitness applications are seen as a means to assist users to record and manage their physical activities.Such applications typically incorporate social network services(SNS)for exercise data sharing and providing social support(e.g.,through “likes”).However, for social influence to work in such applications, users must first share their exercise data with others, which they are often reluctant to do.Understanding the motivations behind the sharing of exercise data on such applications thus becomes an important research issue, which has not been systematically studied. With the above objective,we build a model to explain the social drivers of exercise data sharing in fitness applications based on social influence theory.Specifically,we identify social influence of friends” sharing behavior and social support acquired from friends as the antecedents of sharing exercise data. Our preliminary model is initially tested by collecting objective and survey data from 52 users of a major fitness application.Initial contributions and the future research plan are discussed.
