Improvement of strength and toughness of carbon fiber/SiC composites via introducing SiC nanowire into matrix

Cf/SiC composite was modified by a SiC nanowires(SiCnws)interphase, which grew in-situ in the fibrous preform. The effects of SiCnw interphase on the bending strength and fracture toughness were investigated by comparing with that of a conventional Cf/SiC with a pyrolytic carbon interphase(PyC).The results showed that the SiCnw interphase significantly improved the strength and fracture toughness of the Cf/SiC.The bending strength and fracture toughness were obtained as 427 MPa and 17.91 MPa·m1/2 for Cf/SiC with SiCnw interphase, which were 26.7%and 19.2%higher than that of the conventional Cf/SiC,respectively.The modified interfacial bonding contribute to the improvement of the strength. The tougher composite with SiCnw interphase is contributed to improvement of the interphase shear strength and the pullout of nanowires from the matrix.
