Synthesis and Characterization of In-Situ TiC Reinforced NiAl Based Composites

Using a mix of Al,Ni,Ti and C powders,TiC/NiAl composites with TiC content of 5 vol.%and 10 vol.%were prepared by thermal explosion ignited with intermediate frequency induction heater. The reaction processes and products were analyzed. The reactions took place via two steps: Al+Ni→NiAl,followed by Ti+C→TiC.For the composite having a TiC content of 5 vol.%,the two steps reaction temperatures were approximately 813 K and 907 K respectively at a heating rate of 15 K/min.The apparent activation energies of the two step reactions were 194 kJ/mol and 1096 kJ/mol,respectively.For the TiC content of 10 vol.%,the apparent reaction energies were 418 kJ/mol and 1111 kJ/mol,respectively.The TiC granules have a rectangular shape in TiC(5 vol%)/NiAl composite. Its shape becomes spherical and equally distributed with an increase in volume fraction.Micro-vickers hardness of TiC/NiAl composites were determined and found to be 395±35 HV(5 vol.%of TiC)and 489±28 HV(10 vol.%),respectively.
